“Singapore fiction in English: What and Whom to Read, and Why”. Why have students been assigned these texts to study, and not others? Do they enjoy reading these texts and what would they rather read, if they don’t and had a choice?

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

"Singapore poetry in English: What's Worth Learning by Heart?" Can Singapore poets/poems ever affix themselves in the hearts and minds of present and future generations of Singaporeans. Related to these are cultural identity (Do you need to be Singaporean to be a Singapore poet? Does it help if the poem is in Singlish?) and the processes of canonization. (What does it take for a poem to be enshrined?).

Discussion of these and other lit-related questions with NTU's Prof. Koh Tai Ann, who has compiled the most comprehensive Singapore literature bibliography, and star English Literature teacher Ow Yeong Wai Kit, who has guided students toward O level distinctions, and other Singapore literature experts at the PoetryWalls-NUS FASS Sg Literature Conference on July 29 (Saturday) at LASALLE College of the Arts.
