"Singapore Fiction in English: What and Who do We Read, and Why?"

The conference theme “Examining Literature” could be interpreted either as “critically evaluating” the literature or the practice of Literature examinations which test students’ grasp of prescribed literary texts. Obviously, the weighty implications of either interpretation can hardly be pursued in a brief talk. Nonetheless, I shall, with these implications in mind, briefly describe the range and variety of the fiction and examine what is generally understood by the description “Singapore Fiction in English”. Stories are many (the House of Fiction is capacious), time is short, and there is much else to read besides Singapore fiction – what and who do we read then, and why?

“Singapore Poetry in English: What's Worth Learning by Heart?"

Can Singapore poets/poems ever affix themselves in the hearts and minds of present and future generations of Singaporeans. Related to these are cultural identity (Do you need to be Singaporean to be a Singapore poet? Does it help if the poem is in Singlish?) and the processes of canonization. (What does it take for a poem to be enshrined?).

Discussion of these and other lit-related questions with NTU's Prof. Koh Tai Ann, who has compiled the most comprehensive Singapore literature bibliography, and star English Literature teacher Ow Yeong Wai Kit, who has guided students toward O level distinctions, and other Singapore literature experts at the PoetryWalls-NUS FASS Sg Literature Conference on July 29 (Saturday) at LASALLE College of the Arts.
