When Poetry Marries Calligraphy
part of the Prelude to Poetry Festival 2017

Saturday, 20 May 2017
3pm to 5pm
Blue Room, The Arts House

Remember the days when you scribbled down your favourite poetry in the most calligraphic style you could create? Or, simply penning down some verses as part of your therapeutic scrapbook project? Yes, calligraphy and poetry is on a date and we are inviting you!

With speaker, Mr Chow Teck Seng 周德, this session introduces how calligraphy has been employed to write poems, drawing examples from history, day-to-day life as well as speaker’s own experience. It focuses on Chinese calligraphy using brush and pen to personalize poetry, with also some examples from English and Malay manuscript. There will be a demonstration, followed by hands-on session. Participants will get to use both traditional and contemporary calligraphy materials. Most writing materials will be provided. No prior calligraphy experience required. The session will be conducted in English and Mandarin, with on-site translator, Dr Tan Chee Lay 陈志锐.
