Around the World: Conversation with Anup Mathew Thomas

Description

Join us as Anup Mathew Thomas and LASALLE's ICA Singapore curator Melanie Pocock discuss his photographic projects and projects exploring the Keralan diaspora.

This session is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Native Revisions organised by LASALLE College of the Arts' Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore.

About the Artist

Anup Mathew Thomas is a visual artist who lives and works in Bangalore, India and whose primary medium of choice has been photography. In his recent project Nurses, the subjects are shown in relaxed poses amid pared-down landscapes, highlighting their socioeconomic standing in Kerala (nurses from the state are highly educated and have increased prospects for emigration) and individual characters. Yet there is still a tension in these portraits between location and dislocation; although their current whereabouts can be identified through differences in vegetation, the nurses still seem distanced from their surroundings, their uniforms jarring with the rural settings.
