[Public Lecture] Metallic Thread Embroidery in Asia and Europe: Connections and Borrowings by Mary Brown

Description

This lecture looks at the key developments that made Asian and European metal thread embroidery arguably the most fabulous form of the technique in the long history of textile embellishment. Ms Brown will discuss how nyonya embroiderers explored metal thread embroidery techniques used in other Asian and European traditions to develop a style that became recognizably their own.

This lecture is organised in conjunction with the Nyonya Needlework exhibition.

About the speaker

Mary Brown did her training as an embroiderer at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace, UK. She specializes in metal thread embroidery, and has published on the subject: Goldwork Embroidery: Projects and Designs (2007). This opened the door to collaboration with academics, and opportunities to work as a tutor and practitioner in the field. She is currently a sessional lecturer in the Fashion & Textile Design department of the University of Technology, Sydney, and a tutor for the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW, Australia.

Mary has been collaborating with Dr Cheah Hwei-F’en, guest curator for the Nyonya Embroidery exhibition at the Peranakan Museum, over the past 12 months.
