JomHack Penang: Smart Cities with IoT, is a 24 hour IoT Hackathon, happening in conjunction with MyIoTC Week 2016, in collaboration with Malaysia IoT Consortium (MyIoTC), My MDEC and Pixaworks Creative.


The purpose of this Hackathon is to enable participants to develop usable Smart City solutions using LoRa and Arduino technologies... which can be adopted, and implemented by the Penang city council and other relevant bodies. The winning teams will be walking away with cool Cash & Prizes worth RM20,000!

18th Nov 2016, 6:00pm - 11:00pm: Dinner, Briefing & LoRa Workshop

19th Nov 2016, 9:00am - Overnight: Breakfast, Briefing & Hacking Begins

20th Nov 2016, 11:00am - 3:00pm: Hacking Ends & Final Demo

20th Nov 2016, 11:00am - 4:00pm: Hacking Ends & Final Demo


(Please take note that accommodation is not provided on 18th night. Participants are required to arrange own accommodation. On 19th night everyone will be working overnight at the venue, and a sleeping corner will be allocated for naps. Please bring your own sleeping bags)


Winners will also have the opportunity to work with our IoT Ecosystem Partners to further develop their solutions, and implement them on a larger scale. This Hackathon will be limited to only 40 teams, with 3 members per team.


Terms & Conditions

  1. All participants must be 18 years old and above.
  2. All teams must have 3 members each; at least 1 developer, and 1 hardware person (able to work with Arduino boards), to build the live demo.
  3. All teams must start coding fresh at the event. You’re not allowed to pre-code anything or work on existing projects. You’re allowed to build on top of open source frameworks and resources.
  4. You’re allowed to develop your solution on any platform; web, iOS, Android, etc, but all solutions must use the LoRaWAN network.
  5. Winning teams may be subjected to a code-review either at the event or after the completion of the event. If any teams found guilty of fraud, appropriate action will be taken.
  6. You fully own everything you build at the event, including any hardware kits provided by the organizers. You may receive opportunities to further develop the solutions, from our sponsors and partners but you are free to do as you wish.
  7. This event is open to both Malaysians and non-Malaysians, as long as you have a valid PR or work/student permit.
  8. All projects must be completed within the 24 hour hacking period and a working demo has to be presented to the judges.
  9. All judges decisions are final.
