Sergey PROKOFIEFF - Champagne Concert

Serge Sergeyevich Prokofieff (1891-1953)

One of the major composers of the 20th century, even as a youth Prokofieff developed a new, highly adventurous harmonic language for the works he created to display his virtuosity as a pianist, for the Ballets Russes, and for the opera. When the revolution of 1917 arose, he left Russia for Europe and America in an effort to eke out a living as a pianist, composer, and conductor. The great depression diminished opportunities for production of his ambitious ballets and operas however, and after nearly two decades abroad Prokofieff returned to live the rest of his life in his homeland. Predisposed to composing large-scale operas which were problemmatic to produce, Prokofieff composed many works for orchestra: nine operas, nine ballets, seven symphonies, eight concertos, and music for 10 films.

Tokyo Sinfonia & Robert Rÿker

Lauded as “the most exciting orchestra in Japan,” the Tokyo Sinfonia embodies the warmth and immediacy of Robert Rÿker’s affectionate approach to music. Personable, flexible, and delightfully creative, distinguished by rich sound, lively expression, and friendly rapport with the audience, the Tokyo Sinfonia has won much praise for the imaginative programming and inviting presentation of its hugely enjoyable events.

Maestro Rÿker has appeared in over 50 cities on four continents, served as music director, principal conductor or musical advisor of more than 10 symphony orchestras and opera companies in various parts of the world, and founded orchestras in Canada, India, and Japan.
