Climbing Beyond the Himalayas - A Sharing Session with Dr. Nima

About this Session

OMG is proud to host Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa, founder of Himalayan Medics, for a sharing session on his experience as an expedition doctor and rescuer in one of the harshest conditions on earth, Everest. Attendees will learn about high altitude preparedness, strategies for teaching and training people to respond to disasters on a community level, and stories from past rescue expeditions on the mountains.

In 2014, Dr. Nima was the lead medic to treat and manage the casualties when an avalanche from Mt. Pumori struck the Everest base camp, leaving more then 60 casualties and 14 dead.

On 25th April 2015, when an avalanche triggered by 7.8 earthquake at the Everest base camp left over 20 dead and more than 70 injured, Dr. Nima was one of 5 doctors attending to the mass casualties with just limited resources in extremely challenging environment.


Speaker Bio

Dr Nima is the founder of Himalayan Medics, an organization committed to promoting a safe, secure, and healthy future for Himalayan travel and adventure tourism. Himalayan Medics furthers its cause by educating and fostering awareness about first aid, patient care, and risk management to prevent and minimize casualties.

His experience includes but is not limited to

- teaching and training people to respond to disasters on a community level

- working with rescue missions on mountains

- planning and preparing for trips to Nepal and the Himalayas with focus on traveling to places of high altitude

- personal experience on Everest during the earthquake and avalanches

He is currently en route to New Zealand where he will be sharing knowledge and training needed before traveling to high altitude areas as well as disaster preparedness on the mountains in Nepal at the Sustainable Summits Conference.
