GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES: Studio Ghibli Festival
As part of our ongoing Studio Ghibli series, join us for the critically acclaimed GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.
Based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s semi-autobiographical short story, Grave of the Fireflies consistently ranks on movie aggregate lists as both the top Animated Film of all Time, as well as one of the greatest World War II Films of all time. A powerful reflection on the ravages of war, the film has been celebrated for pushing the perceived limits of the themes an animated film can explore, and the powerful effects an animated film can have on its audience.
After losing their mother to an air raid in wartime Japan, Setsuko and Seita struggle together through the war torn country in an attempt to find food and shelter. As their situation grows grimmer, the two’s spirits are kept afloat from finding entertainment in the light of the fireflies.
NOTE: Do the serious themes this movie explores, parental guidance is suggested.
“An emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.
“…heartbreaking enough to leave any viewer in tears.” – J.D. Considine, Baltimore Sun
