AN EVENING WITH ANSHU GUPTA
We would like to invite you to evening with Anshu Gupta, founder of GOONJ (goonj.org) and pioneer of the waste to wealth movement in India.
Anhsu is the recipient of the 2015 Magsaysay Award. In addition, he is an Ashoka and Schwab fellow and the recipient of the CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award, among numerous other awards.
Anshu founded GOONJ as a non profit organisation, in 1999. GOONJ has collected, sorted and recycled more than 1,000 tonnes (annually) of waste cloth, electronic products and other common urban consumption items to the rural poor as well as for disaster relief.
Anshu will share his journey from the time he decided to reduce the gap between urban surpluses and rural deficits in 1999 to the impact of GOONJ's work 16 years on.
You will hear about GOONJ's innovative approach to dealing with these issues including through their 'Cloth for Work' program which focuses on the dignity of the rural poor. That program empowers the rural poor to "pay" for the clothes/materials provided by GOONJ in exchange for their hands- on socially useful work (e.g.: assisting in digging trenches for their own village).
