Restorative Radio: Public Airwaves in the Age of Mass Incarceration- a talk with:

Sylvia Ryerson WES '09, Radio Producer and musician. Ryerson spent the past 5 years living and working in the Appalachian mountains at Appalshop, the award-winning media arts center in Whitesburg, Kentucky where she was senior reporter and director of public affairs for community radio WMMT-FM. Her research and coverage of prison expansion in central Appalachia has been quoted widely. Ryerson is now working on a new radio series titled: Restorative Radio: working with Family memebers of those incarcerated.

WESU88.1FM, Wesleyan’s community radio station, presents a talk with Sylvia Ryerson ’09, a radio producer, and musician.

Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Sylvia Ryerson spent the last five years living and working in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky at Appalshop, the award-winning media arts center in Whitesburg, Kentucky, where she was a senior reporter and director of public affairs for Appalshop’s community radio station WMMT-FM. Her research and coverage of prison expansion in Central Appalachia, building from her thesis at Wesleyan, has been quoted widely. Ryerson is now working on a new radio series titled Restorative Radio. Working with family members of those incarcerated in two supermax prisons in southwest Virginia, she is producing long-form “audio postcards” that capture sounds, voices and music from home, to be broadcast to those inside.
