The Art Week Conversations offers 3 talks in Considering Art Markets: Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. The talk panelists are experts in the field – including Koh Seow Chuan, respected collector and founding chairman of the National Gallery; Valentine Willie, veteran independent curator and one-time gallerist; Jasdeep Sandhu of Gajah Gallery, known for his international presentations of artists like Yunizar and I Made Djirna; Daniel Komala, Chief Executive Officer of the auction house Larasati; Ong Boo Chai, experienced art professional; gallerists Richard Koh and Benjamin Hampe.

Gallerists and collectors share their minds about the growing art scene in Singapore. Whilst art programmes have hit a new high, are all these exhibitions and programmes able to sustain the artists and their supporting players? What makes it viable; and how do artists, galleries and the growing number of museums and art fairs take it forward? What about Singapore artists in an increasingly international mix of artistic talent?
Thailand: The Price of Selling Local
Saturday 23 January, 7.30 – 9 p.m.
Thai artists like Navin Rawanchaikul, Rirkit Tiravanija and Pinaree Sanpitak have exhibited in major art museums internationally, and Natee Utarit has had a solo exhibition at Singapore Art Museum. Yet, much of the Thai art scene is contained within Bangkok and Chiangmai. Private collectors build their own museums in an effort to identify contemporary art; and many galleries work within a totally local context.
This conversation will discuss the dynamics of the Thai art market; who are the artists that stand out; and how is the art market developing to support new artists?
Indonesia: The Strongman Moves Forward
Monday 25 January, 7.30 – 9 p.m.
Indonesia has always been an area of intensive art activity. The scene varies between Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Bandung and Bali – each with its leading galleries, private museums and artists. Indonesian art has been the staple of Southeast Asian auctions and the obvious choice for Southeast Asian art. Recently huge international support has grown for its contemporary artists at fairs and major galleries. Leading practitioners talk about what is happening and how it is moving.
The Art Week Conversations are insightful, grounded in actual practice, and provide collectors and would-be collectors meaningful ways to navigate the art market.
