Workshop: Typesetting on Mulberry Paper (Christmas Card)
Workshop: Typesetting on Mulberry Paper
Wednesday, 9 December, 2015, 2–3pm
Pearl Lam Galleries is proud to present Aggregation, a solo exhibition by Korean artist Chun Kwang Young, featuring his acclaimed long running series of the same name. In his search for a culturally authentic mode of expression, Chun combines his early experimentations with Abstract Expressionism with his mastery of Korean mulberry paper in his visually alluring large-scaled assemblages.
Crafted from the fibre of the leafy mulberry plant, the delicately translucent yet strong and durable mulberry paper is ubiquitous in Korean culture. The paper has been used for various purposes over the centuries: to package groceries and medicinal herbs, to protect walls and floors, and even as print material. The movable metal type printing system was invented in Korea around the 12th century and was used to print text onto mulberry paper, as in the mulberry paper sourced from old books used in Chun’s works.
This workshop will allow participants a firsthand experience working with this material to create their own Christmas greeting card. Participants will be introduced to letterpress printing and basic type setting on mulberry paper, a modern printing method evolved from traditional movable metal type printing.
Limited seats available.
