PROGRESS
The first of five roundtables on Art and the Big Ideas of a Small Nation, experts across diverse fields are invited to share how the value of Progress affects and influences their experience, expectations, and visions of the individual, communities, and the state.
This Roundtable is part of the Crescent Project: Art Embraces All for the exhibition, 5 Stars: Art Reflects on Peace, Justice, Equality, Democracy and Progress.

Dr. Farish A. Noor
Associate Professor, PhD Programme, National Technological University
Associate Professor, PhD Programme, Nanyang Technological University
Dr. Farish A. Noor is presently an Associate Professor and coordinator of the PhD Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University. Dr. Noor has published many writings on Southeast Asian History, politics and culture and is the co-author of The Madrasa in Asia: Political Activism and Transnational Linkages.

Kelvin Ang Kah Eng
Director, Conservation Management, Urban Redevelopment Authority
Kelvin Ang Kah Eng is the Director of Conservation Management with the Urban Redevelopment Authority. He has led multi-disciplinary teams to deliver several successful projects covering research, planning, conservation and policy matters. These include the gazette of more than 700 additional buildings since 2003, such as the Balestier Road areas, conservation study of Beach Road Camp and restoration of the NUS Baba House in 157 Neil Road. He is also personally involved in promoting Singapore’s intangible heritage.

Faridah Ali Chang
Principal Trainer & Consultant, Rainbow Centre Training & Consultancy (RCTC)
Faridah hasbeen working in the area of special needs for more than 18 years. She shares her experience as a teacher and a psychologist in Early Intervention and Special Education with educators, parents and allied health professionals. She is also an experienced speaker on specific disability topics and regularly presents to the public, medical organisations and tertiary institutions in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.

Tay Kay Chin
Photographer, Singapore
Tay Kay Chin is a Singaporean photographer who works mainly in the documentary and photojournalistic genres. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992 with a degree in photojournalism, and spent more than a decade in newspapers in Singapore and the US, working his way up from photographer to presentation editor. He is also a vocal advocate of photography in Singapore. Besides commercial and personal projects, he devotes his time to promoting photography, writing, consulting and lecturing.

Sam Lo/SKL0
Visual Artist, Singapore
Sam Lo/SKL0 is an urban visual artist currently based in Singapore. Her work is heavily inspired by daily observations and research on the human psyche, from which she executes visual commentary comprising text and imagery. SKL0 starts with a mere question or an observation that quickly turns into an obsession, churning out strings of observatory thoughts that are then processed into deductions fuelled by curiosity.

Dr. Susie Lingham
Director, Singapore Art Museum
Dr. Susie Lingham’s work is many-faceted: as a writer-artist, art theorist and art educator, she synthesizes interdisciplinary ideas relating to the nature of mind across different fields, from the humanities to the sciences. In her current role as Director of SAM, Dr. Lingham engages with the creative process intimately, and much of her work is to actively bridge different audiences and contexts.

5 Stars: Art Reflects on Peace, Justice, Equality, Democracy and Progress is SAM’s salute to Singapore’s Golden Jubilee and the five stars on the Singapore flag which represent universal humanist values. Engaging with these “big ideas” through contemporary art, 5 Stars is an exhibition of five specially commissioned works, curated to encourage contemplation of what these shared human ideals mean in the present day, and how they might continue to help us envision our futures.
