Architecture and the Academy
As communities of learning, residential colleges and universities present unique design challenges. Part home and part workplace, campuses are intimately connected with our increasingly globalised world, but they are also set apart—spaces of introspection and reflection. They are both deeply rooted in tradition and home to our aspirations for the future. They can be the best parts of our cities, and, indeed, they are often cities unto themselves. These dynamics make the opening of Yale-NUS College’s campus truly exciting. Founded as “a community of learning … in Asia, for the world,” Yale-NUS marks a new chapter in liberal arts education, and the design of its campus plays an important role in that mission.
With presentations from Pelli Clarke Pelli, Forum, and Lekker—the three firms that designed the Yale-NUS campus—and responses from Thomas Schroepfer (Singapore University of Technology and Design) and Jane Jacobs (Yale-NUS College) this public forum will explore the unique qualities of the Yale-NUS campus in the context of the larger tradition of campus design in Singapore and beyond.
