Abstract
The Guar Kepah site is a significant coastal shell midden site in Seberang Perai, considered one of the earliest shell-midden sites to be excavated in Southeast Asia. Research has been conducted for more than 160 years by both foreign and local researchers, exposing significant evidence of coastal habitation during the mid-Holocence, around 4,000 – 5,000 years ago, through material remains such as mollusk shells, stone tools, pottery and human remains. Currently, the site holds the only evidence of marine adaptation by prehistoric humans living near the sea in Malaysia.
This talk will mainly discuss the site discovery, findings as well as the issues and challenges faced related to coastal habitation in Peninsular Malaysia in general, particularly in Penang.
