OPEN CONVERSATIONS: FUTURE OF ARTS EDUCATION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Description
OPEN CONVERSATIONS: FUTURE OF ARTS EDUCATION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Professor Malcolm Gillies

Professor Malcolm Gillies studied piano and violin at the Royal College of Music in London, later gaining a PhD in musical analysis from the University of London and a higher doctorate in musicology from the University of Melbourne. He later became the president of two London universities: City and London Metropolitan.

Professor Gillies has wide interests and experience in the arts and education, including questions of assessment, curriculum and pedagogy, careers and community engagement. He has an extensive list of publications, with a particular focus on the works of Bella Bartok and Percy Grainger, and was for many year an arts and education commentator in the Australian and British press.

Synopsis:

This lecture will be presented in three segments. Professor Gillies will take an internationalist perspective, looking at trends in community, primary and secondary education, particularly at the broader foundations from which students progress to more specialized tertiary education and professional education (including continuing professional development). The lecture will look equally at arts education for the development of the general population in South-East Asia, and arts education as a precursor to specialist education, and possible regional careers in the arts. The session will be facilitated by Dr Joyce Koh (Vice-Dean, Interdisciplinary Studies Unit).

* This event is open to all NAFA Staff and Students only.
