LEARNING AND ARTS PRACTICE

Description
LEARNING AND ARTS PRACTICE

Facilitator: Professor Malcolm Gillies

Professor Malcolm Gillies studied piano and violin at the Royal College of Music in London, later gaining a PhD in musical analysis from the University of London and a higher doctorate in musicology from the University of Melbourne. He later became the president of two London universities: City and London Metropolitan.

Professor Gillies has wide interests and experience in the arts and education, including questions of assessment, curriculum and pedagogy, careers and community engagement. He has an extensive list of publications, with a particular focus on the works of Bella Bartok and Percy Grainger, and was for many year an arts and education commentator in the Australian and British press.

Synopsis:

This session will see Professor Gillies cover a few propositions about learning in relation to arts practice (how educational theory tells us we learn; how differently we learn in and across the arts; how we train for diversity and creativity, not conformity), and move into a semi-structured conversation with artist-colleagues.

* This event is open to all NAFA Staff and Students only.
